On the Internet, Everything is Free

With the New York Times officially announcing that Times Select was unofficially a failure, it seems likely the Wall Street Journal will give up its futile quest to make money from online subscriptions.

As newspapers admit defeat, cheap dating sites are going the other way. Hot Or Not, the Web site that first captured the internet’s potential to voyeuristically judge strangers, has reversed its pricing model. Once reliant on advertisers, Hot or Not will start charging users $5.95 a month.

The lesson: Unless you’re offering nudity, it doesn’t matter how many Pulitzer prizes you have, no one is paying for your site.
